This Girl Can

This Girl Can is a campaign launched by Sport England, with an aim to get more women taking part in physical activity.

To target inactive women, the campaign will contribute to increasing physical activity opportunities by appealing towards women of all shapes, sizes and levels of ability.

The Active Lives Survey undertaken by Sport England from November 2017 to November 2018  demonstrates a gap between male and female participation with 27% of females more likely to still be inactive (doing less than 30 minutes of physical activity per week).

The project has been very successful with many more women taking part in physical activity.

This Girl Can – Community Fund

This fund aims to support women aged 16+ to get active by offering National Lottery grants to local projects that will contribute to overcoming the barriers some women face in getting active: from a lack of opportunities offered in their local area, to cost and availability of childcare.

They are looking to support a wide range of ideas – from those that just need a few hundred pounds to larger projects nearer £10,000.

Fit Got Real

The next phase of This Girl Can aims to reach women of all backgrounds and ethnicities who feel left behind by traditional exercise. It aims to connect with women aged 14-60 who tend to be inactive or less active, especially those from low income backgrounds, BAME communities and teenagers.

  • Women in lower paid and routine jobs are twice as likely to be inactive as those in senior managerial roles
  • South Asian and black women are also more likely to be inactive than white women.

Grant scheme

North Somerset Council endorses the This Girl Can campaign and is offering the opportunity for local providers to apply to our North Somerset This Girl Can grant scheme.

Grants of up to £250 are available to help offer new physical activity opportunities to women and girls. The funding can be used to contribute towards coaching, venue, equipment, training and volunteer costs. Click on the link below for further information about the grants scheme.

Important notice: The grants scheme is currently closed but if you do still have a project in mind that will enable more girls/women to become more active please contact the team to discuss.
